Abstract: | Economic reproduction in most African countries is characterized by a disparity between production levels and commodity demand, and a manifold dependence on the West, viz. the preponderant role of foreign capital in gross investment, and the need to import Western technology and expertise. Africa's dependence reflects the continent's economic, scientific and technological backwardness, and the African countries' integration into the world capitalist economy. The dependent character of reproduction in the African countries makes possible their continued exploitation, gives rise to instability and imbalances in their economic development, largely caused by the cyclic and structural crises in the world capitalist economy, and allows the West to exert substantial influence on the shaping of their social relations.
