Abstract:A collection of verbal and visual expressions of Wolof culture, presented in 5 chapters: 1. Source material on the 'fanaal' (lantern) in Gambia and Senegal, as well as in Sierra Leone - 2. Wolof stories: 'The 'buur' (king) and his attendant's wife', as told by the griot Matar Ndumbe Faal,together with four stories told by Keba Xadi Sise of Njau, Upper Saalum: 'The marabout and his mad son', 'The two snakes', 'The three suitors' and 'Fatumata of Masina' - 3. Summaries of and commentaries on Ousmane Sembene's films on the Wolof: 'Borom Sarret' (1963), 'Mandabi' (1968), 'Tauw' (1970), 'Xala' (1974), and 'Ceddo' (1976), by David P. Gamble - 4. Wolof proverbs (examples as well as commentary on the use of proverbs), by David P. Gamble - 5. An account of a Wolof naming ceremony seen at Buntung, near Njau, in Upper Saalum, in 1950, by both David P. Gamble and David Ames.
