Abstract:The brief treatise published here is a peculiar and interesting example of 'manŻaqib', a popular genre in Sufi literature which usually describes the spiritual biography of a 'walŻi', a 'friend of God', who has been endowed with extraordinary capabilities. The 'walŻi' whose exploits are described here is al-MajdhŻub b. Qamar al-DŻin (1796-1831), who left his native al-Matamma in 1821 to follow Mu.hammad 'UthmŻan al-MŻirghanŻi (1793-1852) to the .HijŻaz. Differences between the two led them to separate on the way and al-MajdhŻub continued his journey alone. In Mecca, he contacted A.hmad ibn IdrŻis (c. 1750-1837), who was to have a decisive influence on him. After long years in the .HijŻaz, al-MajdhŻub returned to the Sudan, to the town of SawŻakin, where he attracted a large number of the inhabitants to his teachings. The ten stories related here are reported by IbrŻahŻim al-RashŻid (1813-1874), a student of Ibn IdrŻis. The Arabic text of the stories is presented as well as an English translation. Notes, ref.
