| Abstract: | Some 28 miles west-southwest of al-F¯ashir, the capital of the D¯ar F¯ur Sultanate (Sudan), lay the fertile district of al-.Taw¯ila, with its centre at the village of the same name southeast of Jabal Sh¯oba. Thus it lay within an attractive area for the sultans to parcel out as estates for their officials and others. The author terms these estates administrative estates, because they appear to have been attached to an office rather than to a person. Discussion of the nature and significance of the administrative estate within the overall administrative system of the sultanate has been hampered by the lack of any documents directly arising from such grants. However, in 1974 and 1976 the author was able to photograph two groups of documents (in total, 14 documents) that throw considerable indirect light on several aspects of the administrative estate. The first group is presented here, namely: a transcript of a court hearing before the 'q¯a.d¯i' al-.H¯ajj 'Izz al-D¯in, a famous judge, dated 1226/1811-1812; a decree from Sultan Mu.hammad al-.Husayn confirming the demarcation of a boundary, dated 1274/1857-1858; and a letter from the 'ab¯u 'l-jabb¯ayy¯in' (the chief of the tax collectors) A.hmad N¯ur al-D¯in confirming an estate, undated.
