| Abstract: | In the 'Nuzhat al-.hadi fi akhbar muluk al-qarn al-.hadi' by Mu.hammad al-.Saghir b. Mu.hammad b. 'Abd Allah al-Ifrani, the Moroccan historian who died c. 1150/1737-1738, several pages are devoted to the expedition sent by the Sa'dian sultan al-Man.sur to conquer the Songhay empire in 1591. One section of this is headed 'Dhikr al-khabar 'an Al Sukya muluk al-sudan wa-awwaliy-yatihim' - 'A narration of information concerning the family of Sukya, Kings of the Blacks, and their beginnings' and it consists of a single long quotation from a work entitled 'Na.si.hat ahl al-sudan' by an author cited only as al-Imam al-Takruri. In regard to the question of Askia al-.Hajj Mu.hammad's investiture as 'khalifa' of Takrur this is the only account that fully makes sense, in that it shows the Askiya being given authority to rule the Muslim lands of West Africa (al-Takrur) by the 'Abbasid caliph in Cairo as a lieutenant of his. The true name of the author of the 'Na.si.hat ahl al-sudan' is unknown. The present author contemplates on the identity of al-Imam al-Takruri and presents an English translation of his account of Askiya Mu.hammad and his successors. Notes, ref. |
