Abstract: | The rapid growth of the urban population in developing countries has been cited as the major cause of urban problems in these countries. This paper argues that one of the reasons why urban problemsolving policies have had little effect is that policymakers tend to see urban problems in isolation. It outlines an approach that sees an urban centre, together with its immediate hinterland, as an ecological system. The approach is illustrated by an analysis of the situation of Kisumu, Kenya's third largest town. The mutual interdependence of the town centre and its hinterland is demonstrated by the exchanges of inputs (food, water) and outputs (waste) between the two zones. The importance of the management of urban green spaces for the improvement of the quality of urban life is emphasized. Bibliogr., sum. |
