Spatial analysis
Abstract:This study examines the role of rural periodic markets in the overall socioeconomic development process in North Malakisi Location, Bungoma District, Kenya. Data were collected between January and April 1989 on a selection of seven periodic markets, where a total of 252 traders and consumers were interviewed. After a description of the study area and the research methodology, the author analyses the spatial and temporal distribution of rural periodic markets in the area. Secondly, he discusses the types of traders and consumers visiting the markets, their visiting patterns, modes of transport, and destinations. He shows that periodic rural markets are becoming increasingly important for socioeconomic development, and that this is a result of improved infrastructural facilities. Bibliogr., sum.
