Abstract:This paper deals with rice farming in the swamplands of the western coastal region of Sierra Leone. It discusses the distribution and characteristics of the swamplands, the introduction and development of rice farming in the swamplands, farming methods, drainage and water control measures, and mechanical cultivation. It concludes that, although the development of swamps for rice farming has led to a marked increase in Sierra Leone's rice production, the country's total production of rice is insufficient to meet the ever increasing demand. A further reclamation of swampland for rice cultivation is therefore needed. Bibliogr.
