Abstract: | In the semiarid areas of Zimbabwe the dominant model of agricultural research and extension is still characterized by transfer of technology, and the result is a dearth of appropriate technical recommendations for peasant farmers. The time is right to try an alternative approach. This paper examines the experiences of farmer participatory research and extension in Zvishavane District, Zimbabwe. Participation is the central theme of two projects being developed in Mazvihwa Communal Land in Zvishavane District. The Oxfam-supported community water resources project investigates the potential of vlei utilization, and the ENDA-Zimbabwe trees project is concerned with the development of community forestry initiatives. Both projects involve the close interaction of research and extension activities. Attention is also paid to the community-based research into grazing schemes currently being carried out in Mazvihwa. Again, the methods are participatory in character. The use of local knowledge can be an invaluable tool in designing focused research agendas, suggesting appropriate technological interactions and adapting extension messages. Bibliogr. |
