Abstract: | In this article the author, who made a trip to South Africa in 1991 as a guest of the South Africa Foundation, analyses South Africa's prospects. He starts by highlighting the similarities and differences between the change processes in Eastern Europe and South Africa, and the influence of economic development on democratic evolutions. After an overview of key developments in the country (the changing position of the Afrikaner community since 1948, the township violence that has occurred since De Klerk's 2 February 1990 announcement, and the current process of negotiating a new Constitution) he concludes with three scenarios for South Africa: the German, the Lebanese, and the Latin American option. At the end suggestions for US policy towards South Africa are advanced. Notes, ref. |
