Abstract:Since Namibia's accession to independence on 21 March 1990, the politics of national reconciliation have provided the guiding light for this nascent State and nation. However, for an increasing number of Namibians the government's national reconciliation policy seems opportunistic and SWAPO, the ruling party, is being criticized in its own ranks for 'abandoning socialism'. This paper surveys the first 18 months of Namibian independence, examining the restructuring of government services, the building up of trade unions, changes in the field of education and the judiciary, the role of the National Council and the Regional Councils, the economy in general, foreign aid and investment, and the major economic sectors, such as mining, fisheries, and the land issue. The country's foreign relations, notably with South Africa and other neighbours, are also examined. The conclusion is that the country's policy in two key areas, namely mining and land, will in no small measure determine its future prospects. Notes, ref.
