Abstract:In this study the author focuses on an appropriate trade strategy and development which, in the light of the successful experience of some of the newly industrialized countries, would enable Egypt to face the problem of unemployment. In the course of addressing this issue, the author examines the characteristics of unemployment in Egypt and the policies implemented to confront it, the links between trade strategies and employment in the developing countries in general, and the negative impact of the import substitution strategy of the sixties on employment in Egypt.
