Abstract: | Hunting persists as a pastime among the Úbākala Igbo of Imo State, Nigeria, and every town has a special group of hunters. These hunters are associated in the Úbākala Amalgamated Hunters' Association. This paper, which is based on a hunt in which the author participated in March 1984, describes the preparations for a hunting expedition, the reception of the hunters by the host town, the selection of an area for the hunt, the hunting expedition itself (gunmen, dog minders), the closing session of the hunting expedition, the 'identification of the game' after the hunt, the division of the proceeds of the hunt, and the distribution of the meat within kin groups. Examples of Igbo hunting chants have been included with an English translation. Bibliogr., notes. |
