Abstract:Victimology is that part of criminology which deals with the relationship between the victim and the offender. It appears to be the general pattern in the criminal justice systems in most parts of the world to seek to reduce the number of crimes and criminals and, consequently, victims by deterrence. However, the needs of victims of crimes go beyond the corporate protection of society and the prevention of criminality. This paper examines specific areas of law in Nigeria where victims are offered protection and/or legal compensation. First, the author deals with compensation in civil and criminal cases, amongst others cases of road accidents. Next, he discusses restitution, and the participation of victims in criminal prosecutions. The author states that it is high time Nigeria enacted a victim compensation law providing for damages to be borne by the federal government. He argues for the need to reinject into the criminal justice system the traditional African emphasis on compensation and restitution. Notes, ref.
