Abstract: | The basic aim of local government reform in Nigeria has been to generate active citizen participation in development and government. This study of the distribution of wards in the local government areas in Oyo State shows that wards, which form the basic units of the local government system, have not been given adequate attention in local government reforms. The distribution of the population in the different local government areas is not proportional to the distribution of wards. This means an unequal representation in the government. The study is based on data from the 1963 population census. It appears that Ibadan, Oramiyan, Ogbomoso, Ila and Iwo are underrepresented in their local governments, while Ejigbo, Iseyin, Odo-Otin and Oyo are borderline cases. Bibliogr. |
