Abstract:This is a historical survey of agricultural education and research in the Sudan. First, agricultural education in the Sudan is examined. As a result of British educational policy, the agricultural industry in Sudan lacks the link - an educated peasantry - between farmers and the administrative skeleton. The most immediate way to fill this middle-level management gap has been identified as the provision of training to the existing workforce. Next, a historical survey is presented of agricultural research from the beginning of this century onward, paying attention to various research stations, veterinary research centres, the ARC (Agricultural Research Corporation), the WSARP (Western Sudan Agricultural Research Project), and various international institutions and overseas groups working in the Sudan. The number of agriculturally related studies applicable to the Sudan continued to expand until the early 1980s when the resources all but ran out. Bibliogr.
