Abstract: | Botswana's National Library Service (BNLS) began during the Bechuanaland Protectorate with seven circulating book boxes, followed by community self-help reading rooms and in 1967 a National Library Service Act. The growth of BNLS branch libraries, reading centres, mobile units and school book boxes demonstrates a national commitment to full public library service. The decade of the 80s could be characterized as the era of library cooperation with national development goals. Responding first to recreational reading, then to literary requirements and educational needs, the BNLS enters a new era in the 90s, emphasizing the management of information. Bibliogr. |
