Abstract:This article addresses the problem of chronology in the study of the history of the Igala of Nigeria from 40,000 years ago up to c. 1830 AD. The pre-19th century period of Igala history is affected by the dearth of written material of a type that would aid the researcher in building up an absolute chronology. This article is devoted to the reconstruction of a relative chronology derived from archaeology, historical linguistics, oral tradition, generation lengths, king lists, and written evidence.
