Abstract: | NCE/cc stands for the correspondence programme (Nigeria Certificate in Education, by Correspondence) organized by the Distance Learning Division of the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. Writing is an important aspect of the General English curriculum. This study was undertaken to find out if NCE/cc students' needs in writing are being met. A written questionnaire was presented to a sample of 88 first-year and 66 fourth-year students and 14 General English lecturers in 1986. All the writing skills included in the questionnaire (such as ability to use punctuation marks correctly; ability to write various types of essays such as narrative, description and argumentation; ability to write informal and formal letters using an appropriate format; ability to write minutes and meeting reports) were considered as high-need areas by both students and teachers. The author recommends that the needs of each group of new entrants should be assessed using a needs assessment procedure. App., Bibliogr. |
