Abstract: | Nigerian precolonial historiography has concentrated on prominent kingdoms and major ethnic groups, neglecting acephalous societies such as the Owan. The Owan inhabit Owan Local Government Area of Bendel State, Nigeria, and linguistically they belong to the Edo-speaking people centred in Benin. The author presents a research agenda for the study of the history of the Owan, emphasizing the need to pay equal attention to the roles of men and women, and indicating the type of oral traditional material that would have to be used in the absence of written sources.
