Abstract: | The study of political leadership involves far more than an examination of the public policies pursued by a leader, or of his political style. These are only two ingredients of what is a multifaceted phenomenon. Using M.G. Hermann's (1986) five ingredients of leadership as their framework for analysis, the authors offer a wide-ranging discussion of the political leadership of President F.W. De Klerk of South Africa. These ingredients are: the setting in which leadership operates; the leader's personality and background; the attributes of the groups and individuals whom the leader is leading; the interaction between leader and followers; and the outcome of interactions between leader and followers in particular situations.
