Abstract:This report is a synopsis of the principal findings of a study initiated by the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) to examine current weaknesses in the graduate education of economists in sub-Saharan Africa, and identify possible remedies. The many issues affecting graduate training in economics are grouped under four major headings: public policy toward tertiary education, the incentive structure to pursue an academic career, the capacity and relevance of graduate programmes in economics, and regional collaboration. Feasible responses are recommended in each case. Findings are based largely on fieldwork conducted from mid-June to early August 1989 which resulted in three separate draft reports on eastern and southern Africa (Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia), anglophone West Africa (Nigeria and Ghana) and francophone West Africa (Ivory Coast and Senegal).
