Abstract: | Often scarcity of water is the most severe constraint for traditional agriculture in the Sahel. Runoff irrigation, i.e. irrigation utilizing rainfall without temporary storage facilities, is one way of improving the use of surface runoff. A number of parameters must be considered in determining which areas have the potential for this type of irrigation. This study develops a way of identifying potential areas for the application of runoff irrigation systems in the semi-arid Sahel zone, focusing on the Kanguessanou valley, Kayes Region, Mali. The methodology developed combines both theoretical studies (the organization of a geographical information system) and remote-sensing technology. |
