Abstract:Beans are an important dietary source in Tanzania which is one of 18 countries in the Bean/Cowpea (C(ollaborative) R(esearch) S(upport) P(rogram) aiming to develop higher yielding bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivars that would be more resistant to disease, insects and drought. An earlier paper (E.R.B. Paper 83.3) provided a summary of the farming systems and other socioeconomic data in two important bean-growing areas in Morogoro region. This paper summarizes data obtained a year later in one of those same areas, Mgeta, in the Uluguru mountains. Apart from using more current data, it is based on a set of villages which are different from those used in the earlier study.
