Abstract: | One of the components of the system of divination, called 'afa', which exists among the Igbo of Nigeria, is poetry. This poetry is not only religiously inspired but it is also as poetic as any other type of Igbo oral poetry. A comprehensive 'afa' session is made up of eight structural parts: inquiry, instrumental prompting, poem, dialogue, poem, dialogue, report, prescription. While the overall 'afa' literary corpus contains more than poetry, 'afa' poetry is the main focus of this article, and the author examines its features, structure, style and content. Notes, ref. |
