Abstract:This paper formulates a conceptual model for the analysis of links between international market conditions and their influence on the sustainability of agricultural production. After the introduction, ch. 2 deals with resource use and environmental problems in the agricultural sector. Ch. 3 operationalizes the concept of sustainable agriculture, from both a static and a dynamic point of view. Ch. 4 sketches a model for analysing the influence of changes in international market structures on the sustainability of a given national agricultural system. In ch. 5, the influence of international market changes on agricultural resource use is sketched for six characteristic agri-ecological systems. This chapter includes the following case studies from Africa: Livestock in Botswana; Cotton production in south Mali; Resource use and environment in cocoa production (West Africa amongst others); and The special role of gum arabic from Sudan. In ch. 6 the usefulness and applicability of the conceptual framework is discussed on the basis of the case studies.
