Abstract: | This paper, which is based on fieldwork conducted from June to December 1984 in Gloucester village, one of the five Creole 'mountain villages' near Freetown, Sierra Leone, deals with Creole culture from the perspective of the relatively poor, rural Creoles, and examines how they cope in modern Sierra Leone. Attention is paid to Creole village life, economic activities, the recent rise in social and economic status of rural Creoles, relations with other ethnic groups, notably the Loko, the custom of wardship (the placement of a child with another family for a period of time), and the process of Creolization.
