Abstract:This report gives some preliminary results of an investigation of agricultural commercialization in Swaziland. It is based on an analysis of data derived from the Central Statistics Office's Annual Sample Survey of Swazi Nation Land 1982-1983. The investigation aimed at comparing commercial and noncommercial household and farm characteristics, in order to shed light on the circumstances under which the decision to embark on commercial farming is undertaken. The following aspects of the households' resource base were examined: access to land, household size and labour availability, and sources of capital. Attention was also paid to farm practices (types of crops grown, inputs, timing of planting, methods of planting and ploughing, maize yields) and to the impact of nonedible cash crops on acreage under food crops.
