Abstract: | This paper examines the impact of changes in socioeconomic and political conditions over the past century upon the coping strategies available to the pastoral Maasai of Kajiado District, Kenya. Responses to drought among the Maasai are integral to the structure of society-environment interaction and are therefore liable to change as the developmental context is altered. Colonial and postcolonial development policies failed to recognize this relationship and have altered the efficacy and variety of coping strategies such that the Maasai are today more vulnerable to the effects of drought. Development strategies which enhance the diversity and productivity of the Maasai economy are required to prevent the economic and social marginalization of the majority of Maasai. Bibliogr. |
