Abstract: | After a description of the origin and existence of secret societies in West Africa, the paper reviews the following secret societies in Ibibioland (southeastern Nigeria): Ekpo Ekong, Ekpri Akata, Ekpe, Obon, Ekpo Nyoho and Ekpo Ndem Isong, Idiong, Ekong and Ekang. It concludes that secret societies were a common feature in the social, political, religious and even economic life of traditional societies in West Africa. They were important instruments of government; they served as the legislative, executive and judicial organs of government. Ref. |
