Abstract:Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, South Africa has rapidly developed diplomatic and other ties with Eastern Europe. Even before then, tentative links had emerged. Besides the political, cultural and scientific exchanges that have taken off, trade links have also firmed. Despite the difficulties of doing business with the formerly communist world, bilateral trade has grown appreciably. Some problems do remain, not least of these the troubled relationship between political parties within South Africa close to the former communist regimes, and the suspicions of the new governments in Eastern Europe because of these close ties.
