Abstract:The issue of foreign investment remains a politicized issue in South Africa. In the recent past, the sanctions issue highlighted this. Now, some black business people regard foreign investment as a potential threat to blacks' increasing their share of the formal economy. There is indeed a compromise option, whereby foreign investors could make various provisions for black empowerment. There are varied kinds of foreign investment: the focus here is on direct foreign investment, how it can assist the South African economy, and how best to attract it. The prospects for direct foreign investment are also assessed, and, in passing, the thorny issue of competition for foreign investment among southern African States. Notes, ref.
