Abstract: | In southern Mali, drastic changes have been taking place recently as a result of the urbanization of Bamako. The author's hypothesis, that the demand of Bamako's urban dwellers for foodstuffs and other daily necessities, such as fuelwood or charcoal, will affect the pattern of market activities at the periodic markets in the capital city's rural hinterland, is supported by his research findings. In this article, he reports on the characteristics of the distribution of periodic markets in southern Mali and how this is related to the development of small urban centres. He also presents data on the activities of traders obtained through observation of periodic markets in August-September 1987, December 1989-January 1990 and August-September 1990, and describes social change in one small urban centre, Ouelessebougou, where he carried out fieldwork in 1968.
