| Abstract: | This paper considers the potential and the problems of contract farming in the context of agricultural development. The term is taken to include pre-production agreements between commercial buyers and farmers. A review of the theory of contract production, focusing on the problems of market coordination and the role of information, is followed by a survey of the literature on actual contract farming schemes. This includes a comparison of schemes in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The final section summarizes the results and provides some conclusions regarding the impact of contract farming on small farmers. |
