Abstract: | Aro colonial primary source materials include intelligence reports, notes, memoranda, minutes, and other related documents most of which have been preserved at the Enugu, Ibadan, and Kaduna branches of the Nigerian National Archives. They were largely the creation of British colonial officials and administrators. The overwhelming interest exhibited by the colonial officials in the Aro was engendered by their much acclaimed 'superior intelligence' vis-à-vis the Igbo and Ibibio and their widespread influence in the whole of southeastern Nigeria. The British assumed that the Aro, like the Fulani in northern Nigeria, could be used to implement the indirect rule policy in Igboland. This paper analyses colonial source material on the Aro, arguing that the small fragments of factual evidence it contains are enmeshed in heavy doses of speculation. Notes, ref. |
