Abstract: | Age misreporting can lead to distortions in age distributions in populations where dates of birth are not generally known. Such age misreporting can also lead to appreciable biases in fertility and mortality estimates for such populations, depending on the estimation technique. This paper highlights the magnitude of the problem and shows how age distributions, affected by misreporting, can be smoothed out. Data are based on a single round, retrospective survey carried out by the author among the Kanuri of Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, in 1982. The results of the research show obvious indications of age misreporting. Thus, graduation had to be carried out in the reported Kanuri age distributions. One method to eliminate these errors in age distributions is discussed here. It is a modification of the technique devised by W. Brass (1971), which is based on the logit transformations of the cumulated age distributions. Because the reported male age distributions were better than those for females, the former were used for fitting the models. The graduation procedure involved two major tasks: the graduation of the reported male age distribution, and the calculation of the graduated female age distribution from the male age distribution. The procedures involved in each of these are explained here. Bibliogr., sum. |
