Abstract: | In the wake of Wole Soyinka's 1986 Nobel Prize the academic market was inundated by monographs, critical anthologies, and special journal issues devoted to the Nigerian author, although some of these works were in progress and even in press at the time of the award. The author has chosen to represent the great variety of material by discussing two critical studies ('Wole Soyinka and modern tragedy: a study of dramatic theory and practice' (1986), by Ketu Katrak, and 'Wole Soyinka' (1986), by James Gibbs), two special journal issues ('Literary Half-Yearly: Wole Soyinka Number', vol. 28, no. 2, 1987, ed. by James Gibbs, and 'Black American Literature Forum', vol. 22, no. 3, 1988, ed. by Joe Weixlmann), and one anthology ('Before our very eyes: tribute to Wole Soyinka' (1987), by Dapo Adelugba). Katrak's study is discussed at length because it has received relatively little attention to date. Bibliogr. |
