Abstract: | In the preceding two decades the Sierra Leone government has paid special attention to the development of the rural sector. One of the approaches used in attacking rural problems has been the community development approach. This paper examines community development programmes in rural areas in Sierra Leone. It discusses the concept of community development, the origin of and experiences with community development in Sierra Leone, achievements of community development programmes and problems that have hindered effective implementation of the programmes. The author concludes that community development in Sierra Leone has not been very effective. Particularly, the involvement of the rural clientele in the design of programmes and the formulation the goals has been neglected. In conclusion, recommendations for improvement in the future are suggested. Bibliogr. |
