Abstract: | This book describes the process of conversion of Mafa women to Islam, focusing on how this process affects gender relations and women's religious and economic positions, and how women use the existence of an alternative religion to change their lives. It is based on fieldwork carried out from December 1986 to June 1988 in Mokolo village in North Cameroon. One aspect of the study is what people do with the main features of their former religion after conversion, such as the libations made on all sorts of occasions in the personal jar each individual possesses. |
