Abstract:This article assesses the rate and nature of environmental change in a small area around Bobonong, a village situated in the Bobirwa Sub-District in eastern Botswana. It offers information on human activities in the area, livestock numbers, the physical environment, the climate, and the natural vegetation. At four different localities the vegetation was sampled in detail to investigate the relationship between vegetation and distance from human settlements. The conclusion is that since 1966 there has been a rapid increase not only in human population but also in livestock numbers. This has resulted in overstocking of the veld and subsequent overgrazing and soil erosion, especially within Bobonong itself and the areas immediately adjacent to it. In contrast, in areas away from human settlement much of the original climax vegetation still remains largely untouched by man's activities. Climatic factors, such as low rainfall, have exacerbated the effects of overstocking. Furthermore, livestock make up the core of the rural economy, and are not only important for social and cultural reasons, but they also provide a vital source of income for many Babirwa. Bibliogr.
