Abstract:This article examines the living environment of the Topnaar of Namibia. The Topnaar live in two distinct areas in the Namib desert, viz. the Kuiseb River valley and the Sesfontein area. The ecology of both these zones is discussed in detail. With respect to the Kuiseb area, attention is paid to climate and to the geography, geology and vegetation of the Kuiseb River valley, the gravel plain of the central Namib, the coastal plain south of Walvisbay, the inselbergs, the Swartbankberg, and the sand dunes of the southern Namib. For Sesfontein, the climate, geography, geology and vegetation of the Hoanib River, the plains of Sesfontein, and the mountain ranges are discussed. Special attention is given to the plant communities occurring in both areas.
