Abstract:The marketing system of sorghum, the staple food crop in the Sudan, is faced with a number of problems, viz. inadequate infrastructure, oligopoly, price variation and the shail system. The objectives of the present study are to provide the various government institutions in Sudan responsible for food security policy with data about the performance of the marketing system of sorghum; to identify the structural and organizational characteristics likely to generate inefficiencies in the sorghum marketing system; and to compare various efficiency measures in terms of their results in assessing the marketing system of sorghum. The conceptual framework of the study revolves around marketing efficiency. Four sorghum surplus areas - Gedaref, Sinnar, Kosti and Abbasia - and three deficit areas - Khartoum, Elobeid and Umrawaba - were chosen for research. 100 traders, farmers and transporters were surveyed using interviews and structured questionnaires.
