Abstract: | This article outlines the role of lawyers in society, with particular reference to mainland Tanzania. Three broad categories of lawyers are considered, namely judges and magistrates, advocates, and academic lawyers. The article also examines some of the challenges facing lawyers in performing their role, in particular those arising from Tanzania's economic difficulties, and those which arise from the interaction between the work of lawyers and acts of the executive. The author, Justice of Appeal of the Tanzania Court of Appeal, draws largely on experiences in the judiciary. Ref. |
