| Abstract: | Hypothesizing that multiple cropping is a form of risk aversion, the author applied the concept of stochastic utility approach to farmers' behaviour in order to identify the determinants of multiple cropping in northern and southern Ethiopia. The test was carried out using socioeconomic and demographic data collected during the first half of 1989. The author found that in the relatively fertile areas of the south, the number of dependent household members had a positive effect on multiple cropping. People with no other sources of income in the south also tended to engage in multiple cropping. The situation in the north was found to be different from that in the south. Possible explanations for the difference between the results in the two regions, as well as the policy implications of the findings, are discussed. Bibliogr., sum. |
