Abstract: | Nigeria's leadership of the Ecomog initiative in Liberia - the sending of troops by ECOWAS - underscores the determination of the Babangida regime to assert Nigeria's presence and importance in West Africa. Seen against the background of the West African policy of the Buhari administration (1984-1985), which appeared to be highly nationalistic and even hostile to the interests of Nigeria's neighbours, Babangida's pro-West Africa attitude, and his emphasis on ECOWAS, tend to be a radical departure from the past. However, rather than being a new policy posture, the present regime's West African agenda is in effect an affirmation of previously accepted principles guiding Nigeria's role in the region.
