Abstract:Margaret, Lady Herschel, accompanied her husband, Sir John Herschel, to the Cape of Good Hoop, South Africa, in 1834. During her four-year stay in the country she wrote letters to her mother and her brothers and cousins. She also kept accounts recording all household transactions. This volume contains the letters, and the complete expenditure record for the first month. Together, they provide a rich source of information about life at the Cape a century and a half ago.
