Abstract:This paper is a keynote address delivered by the author at the Geography Workshop organized by the Organization of Social Science Research in Eastern Africa at Debre Zeit, Ethiopia, November 15-20, 1988. The paper outlines the developmental and environmental challenges facing geographers in the eastern and southern African region. The paper contends that in this region, with minor exceptions, research on the problems that affect the society and the environment seems to have been relegated to a secondary position. The paper urges geographers in the region to direct their research contribution to the structuring of new social processes and spatial reorganizations. The bulk of the address focuses on environmental problems facing the eastern and southern African region that can provide topics for geographers who share a concern for action through research.
