Abstract:Since the manifestation of the economic crisis in Nigeria in 1982, neoliberal policies have dominated in the country. The student movement has consistently opposed the structural adjustment programme (SAP). While the government has been able to disorganize various trade unions and professional organizations, the ban on the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has never succeeded. This paper deals in particular with the student protest against the increase in the price of petroleum in 1988, the response of the State to this protest, the NANS counterstrategy and 1989 actions against the SAP, and NANS agitation against the World Bank in 1990.
