Abstract:The Gezira hydroagricultural scheme in Sudan covers 0.88 million ha of command area allotted to more than 100,000 tenants. Each tenant holds 16.8 or 8.4 ha divided into four equal rotation plots called tenancies and locally known as 'hawashas'. The plots are divided between cotton, wheat, sorghum/groundnuts and fallow. Production is centrally planned. The author describes the Gezira scheme and its background history, the canal system, the methods used by tenants, the attitudes of officials and tenants towards the different crops, the effects of irrigation on soils, the use of chemical pesticides and the spread of water associated diseases.
