Abstract:Research was carried out in 1985 in the Nguru Hills in eastern Tanzania in order to examine some of the cultural and economic mechanisms involved in the spread of Iron Age technology and agriculture in Tanzania. Surface collections from the 16 sites located during the survey, together with excavated materials from Mlaguzi school and Chabula rockshelter, form the basis of a preliminary reconstruction of the local ceramic sequence. Four main ceramic groups were recognized. Late Stone Age occupation in the area is represented by Kansyore-like ceramics. The second group was Early Iron Age Kwale pottery. The Late Iron Age ceramics belong to two main groups. The oldest shows affinities with pottery referred to elsewhere as 'Tana Tradition'. The most recent Late Iron Age group is known only from surface collections. This pottery dates back at least a century and probably more. Bibliogr.
